Why do we love Thanksgiving so much? A few simple reasons, really. It’s always on a Thursday—meaning you’re always guaranteed a four-day weekend. There’s no stress or requirement to give gifts on Thanksgiving. Actually, in most cases you pretty much just get at least one free meal, plus leftovers. Mostly, it’s an excuse to watch sports (if that’s your thing), get drunk (if that’s your thing), overeat (if that’s your thing), and fall asleep at 6 p.m. (if that’s your thing). It’s the American dream! Plus, most importantly, there’s nothing about Thanksgiving that causes people to trample each other at malls, get in fights over Starbucks cups, or put up stupid decorations that we have to stare at until late January. (We’ll conveniently ignore Black Friday, which is the anti-Thanksgiving. Official stance: Black Friday is bad.)

Thanksgiving is at least in the top-three holidays (along with New Year’s Eve and Halloween). And it’s a damn shame there aren’t more songs about it.

We should put more effort into Thanksgiving, a holiday that—unless you’re a turkey or a member of PETA—is completely harmless. Why haven’t people written more songs about Thanksgiving? The only answer I can think of is the only reason there aren’t more Thanksgiving songs is so we won’t have to listen to them relentlessly for three months.

Thanksgiving is fucking awesome. Here are 24 songs to celebrate one of the greatest days of the year.

“A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” — George Winston
