One of the biggest lingering mysteries in the story surrounding Aaron Hernandez‘s suicide is the nature of his relationship with fellow inmate Kyle Kennedy, alleged by some to be the former NFL star’s prison lover.
In a new interview with Dr. Phil, Hernandez’s finacée throws cold water on those allegations, saying both that Hernandez and Kennedy were not close friends and that her late fiancé was definitively not gay.
“I have no indication or any feeling that he was such. He was very much a man to me,” Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez said when asked if Hernandez was secretly gay. “I don’t know where this came from. It’s embarrassing, in a sense. It’s hurtful.”
She added that the rumor about Hernandez’s sexuality was brought up to her by his defense team. Why would Hernandez’s lawyers care about their clients sexual preference? Because it was a possible motive for his murder of Odin Lloyd, the semi-pro football player who Hernandez was convicted of killing in 2015. According to one report, Lloyd knew that Hernandez was bisexual and that led the former New England Patriot to murder him.
Jenkins-Hernandez wasn’t just guessing that Hernandez wasn’t gay. She says she asked him and he flatly denied it.
The interview that aired Tuesday was the second part of her sit down with Dr. Phil. On the first part, she said when she first got the call about Hernandez’s suicide she thought it was a “hoax.”
“I thought that this was some cruel person … playing a trick on me,” she said.
She added that she still doesn’t believe that he committed suicide. “It’s just not the Aaron that I know,” she said. “I think that if he would have done something like this, it would have been at his worst, and I felt like it was looking so bright. I don’t think it was a suicide.”
