Five Badass New Kickstarters To Check Out This Weekend
Kickstarter is a magical place — or it can be, anyway. For each great invention to emerge from its pages, there are probably a dozen more that never had a prayer. Worst of all, though, is when great ideas go unnoticed. That means a great product that could have changed lives never gets the funding it deserved — and often for no good reason.
To help avoid those great ideas falling through the cracks, each week we’re bringing you handpicked Kickstarters you should know about. Some may have blown through their funding goal already, and some may be struggling, but they’re all producing awesome gear that could make your life that much better.
Casper Labs: Humidity Fighting Duvet
If you’re anything like me, you struggle between enjoying the weight of a duvet but hating getting hot and sweaty on all but the coldest nights. Casper Labs thinks they have the solution, and it involves… wool? Yes, the stuff that keeps you warm in the winter can also be used to keep you cool and dry. Unlike traditional duvets, the combination of fine merino wool and down allows air to circulate and draws moisture away, and the wool has natural antimicrobial properties (translation: it won’t get gross and smelly). It’s from the same people who brought you the beloved Casper mattress, so they know what they’re doing.
NITRO KING: Make Nitro Cold Brew Coffee Easily At Home
By now, people who really like it have figured out that it’s actually pretty easy to make cold brew coffee at home, for cheap. But the new hotness (coldness?) is nitro cold brew, and you can’t get that anywhere but a coffee shop — until now. The Nitro King takes your own cold brew and mixes it with nitrogen gas before pulling it through the tap, giving it a thick, creamy Guinness-like head. Honestly, it’s not clear that you couldn’t use this for beer, if you wanted.
TEEBAGS: Golf Meets Cornhole
Cornhole is a good and fun game, but it’s nice to mix it up a little. Golf can also be fun, but playing it at all require, uh, a whole golf course. Teebags (excellent name) works with your existing standard-size cornhole boards to create a whole new game. Choose your weapon, and then try to pitch the included foam balls from the turf to the board — 1 point for the rough, 3 for the green and 5 for the hole.
Maglev Glide: The World’s First Magnetic Levitation Shower Door
Everything claims to be a “world’s first” on Kickstarter, but they may be onto something here. Every other shower door relies on rollers or a simple metal track to slide back and forth, and that presents problems: rust, bacteria, mold and calcium buildup, to name a few. But because the Maglev Glide doesn’t roll or slide on anything at all, it’s less friendly to bacteria and can’t really rust or get stuck. I don’t know what the going rate is for custom shower doors, but this seems pretty reasonable.
KIWI COOLER: A New Era of Coolers
There are plenty of coolers that pack in all kinds of features and gadgets, but most fail to address a fundamental problem: can I get it to my destination? Most have small plastic wheels that just don’t roll well in sand and rough terrain, but the Kiwi Cooler features huge rubber tires that roll effortlessly over just about anything. It’s not without its tricks, either, including a waterproof valuables compartment and a built-in Bluetooth speaker to bump the tunes.
