7 Brilliant New Kickstarters To Check Out This Weekend
Kickstarter is a magical place — or it can be, anyway. For each great invention to emerge from its pages, there are probably a dozen more that never had a prayer. Worst of all, though, is when great ideas go unnoticed. That means a great product that could have changed lives never gets the funding it deserved — and often for no good reason.
To help avoid those great ideas falling through the cracks, each week we’re bringing you handpicked Kickstarters you should know about. Some may have blown through their funding goal already, and some may be struggling, but they’re all producing awesome gear that could make your life that much better.
FlasKap: Mix & Carry The Perfect Cocktail Everywhere You Go
There are lots of places you’d like to bring a cocktail, but it’s not always convenient. The campsite or boat aren’t ideal mixology platforms, for instance, and of course the buzzkills at concerts and sporting events are on the lookout for flasks. But FlasKap fits onto the lid of your favorite tumbler, and discretely holds enough booze for five individual cocktails. Each press of the button delivers .5 oz of liquor into whatever’s in the tumbler below, so you can make your drinks as strong (or as heavy) as you like.
AN22: Titanium Futuristic EDC Retractable Blade & Multi-Tool
Imagine having an EDC blade that you could actually use… every day! This is probably the sleekest, most functional multi-tool I’ve ever seen in such a small package. It has a retractable flat and serrated blade for slicing and sawing, and the body has cutouts to fit around sockets, drive bits and nailheads. And since it’s made of titanium, you know it’s ultra-tough.
Magna Cat Toilet: The World’s First Extendable Cat Toilet
There’s a lot on Kickstarter for dog owners, but guys own cats too. Having to scoop your cat’s poo out of a box is already enough of an indignity, made even worse if your litter box doesn’t fit the new cat you brought home. Even the largest boxes have low-hanging lids, which aren’t suitable for some bigger cats like Maine Coons. But because the Magna can grow with the cat, he’ll always fit. You still have to scoop his poo, though.
airU: Made To Set You Free
Traveling with a jacket can feel more like a punishment than leisure time, because they take up so much space. But the designers of airU saw parachutes and thought “why not just make a jacket out of that?” The result is a jacket that’s warm and weatherproof, but thin and lightweight enough that it can practically fold down small enough to fit in your pocket. It’s pretty stylish, too, if you ask me.
Uno Bolt: Worlds First E-Unicycle / E-Bike With Gyro Force
The original Segway never took off, but with the rise of “hoverboards” and generally improving technology, people seem more receptive to the idea of getting around via machines that aren’t bikes. What I like about the Uno Bolt is that it’s actually less gimmicky than similar vehicles because it has handlebars — instead of being a glorified unicycle, this is a serious piece of equipment for getting around on something with an almost nonexistent footprint. It’s legit, too: It charges from 0 to 100% in just 45 minutes, scoots you along at up to 22 mph, and goes for 25 miles on a single charge.
GoBout: The World’s Best Portable Multi-Dispenser
Traveling with liquid hygiene products was never fun, and our airport security theater doesn’t make it any better. Bottles for things like shampoo take up a lot of space, and they’re basically guaranteed to leak. But the GoBout allows you to store several of your toiletries in one spill-proof container that’s about the size of a can of shaving gel — just rotate the top and pump out your shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc. The larger size only requires that you remove the individual capsules at security, and the smaller one can pass through unmolested.
The Happy Shaver: The Denim Strip That Changes S(h)aving
If you’ve ever used an old timey straight razor, you’re probably familiar with a strop: leather on one side and canvas on the other, it’s used to hone the razor’s edge between shaves. But most men opt for the simpler (yet expensive) disposable razor cartridges, and the only way to hone them is via that internet hack about rubbing them on denim. What these guys have done is combine the two: The Happy Shaver is basically a denim strop, and by using it each time you shave, you can use a single cartridge up to 90 times. That’ll save you about $150 per year.
RocketBottle: World’s Best Portable Blender
If you want a frozen drink at the pool or the beach, you’re out of luck unless you’re at a resort with a swim up or poolside bar. But your situation is improved considerably if you have the RocketBottle, a powerful blender that runs a 22,000 RPM motor with a cordless power pack. All you need is ice, booze and mixers, and you’re ready to go. Beyond alcohol, the RocketBottle will whip up a far superior protein shake to any of those so-called “blender jars.”
