The UFC star and the greatest boxer of his era are finally going toe to toe.
UFC golden boy and trash talker extraordinaire Conor McGregor is finally going to get his chance to back up his mouth. Undefeated boxing legend (and noted wife-beater) Floyd Mayweather has signed on to fight McGregor on August 26th in Vegas. The two men have been jawing at each other for months now, and many felt like the fight would never actually happen, as, well, McGregor is a mixed martial artist who has NEVER BOXED BEFORE, and Floyd Mayweather is the greatest boxer of his generation. But according to Yahoo Sports, it’s actually going down.
According to UFC president Dana White, the fight will be at T-Mobile
Arena in Las Vegas and will be contested at 154 pounds. The Nevada
Athletic Commission on Wednesday approved the request from Mayweather
Promotions to put on a boxing card on Aug. 26 at the MGM Grand. The
venue could change, however, to T-Mobile.
The bout will be distributed via Showtime pay-per-view. It will be an
entirely boxing card. Mayweather Promotions will be the lead promoter.
According to TMZ, Dana White has said the fight will make Conor McGregor upwards of $100 Million, which means that Mayweather is likely to make significantly more than that, as again, he’s an undefeated boxer and McGregor has never boxed before. As much as I desperately would love to see someone beat the shit out of Floyd, I worry about McGregor (and not just because he watches rom-coms). He may be the UFC lightweight champ, but Floyd makes people who have dedicated their lives to boxing look like chumps. I’m not sure “beginner’s luck” is going to be enough to save the Irishman.
