Jerry Seinfeld’s refusal to hug Kesha on a red carpet Tuesday was a painfully awkward moment for the ages–but according to the Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee star, it was nothing personal. He just literally doesn’t know her.

“I’m 63, I don’t know every pop star! I don’t know everyone,” Seinfeld told Extra‘s AJ Calloway. After Calloway dispelled the rumor that Seinfeld’s not a hugger by going in for a hug himself, Seinfeld pointed out that Kesha was “a total stranger,” whereas he’s known Calloway for years.
“I was in the middle of an interview, it was a little off,” Seinfeld continued of the brief exchange with Kesha. “When you get to be my age and you’ve done a couple of things, you have your own reality, and my reality, I don’t hug a total stranger. I have to meet someone, say hello… A hug is not first moment [between] two humans. I have a borderline harassment case here!”
And here’s where the really key takeaway comes in. After Calloway pointed out that Kesha’s probably been watching him for years, Seinfeld pointed out: “I’m sure I would have liked her, but I need to know: who are you? The TV only works one way.”
Duly noted, Jerry.
