Trending News: Is This Supermodel Involved In The Weirdest Money Scandal Of 2017?
Why Is This Important?
Supermodel Miranda Kerr is in the middle of a seriously bizarre money laundering scandal worthy of its own HBO special.
Long Story Short
1) Australian beauty Miranda Kerr reportedly dated controversial Malaysian businessman Jho Low for a year and nobody knew about it. 2) He won her heart by showering her with diamonds purchased with money he allegedly stole from the Malay people. 3) How is this real life?!
After supermodel Miranda Kerr split from hubby Orlando Bloom in 2013 (and before she walked down the aisle with Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel in 2017), she allegedly had a secret yearlong relationship with Malaysian businessman Jho Low who, according to the US Department of Justice, wooed her with countless diamonds he himself didn’t really pay for. Yes, this story is about as bizarre as it gets and you’re in for a wild ride, but before we go any further, here is a photo of Low:

Now, back to the scandal at hand. The billionaire is said to have gone all out to impress Kerr, giving her $13.3 million-worth of jewels, which the Department of Justice says he purchased using money from a Malaysian state fund called 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), which was set up to help development and the Malay people. Low is believed to be part of a group of individuals with possible ties to the country’s prime minister who are being accused of stealing $6 billion from the fund and using the dollas to support their lavish lifestyles, spoil friends and even fund movies, including The Wolf of Wall Street (whose rights are owned by Red Granite Films, a company co-founded by Riza Aziz, the stepson of Malaysia’s Prime Minister).
Low’s first gift to the brunette beauty was an 11.72 carat heart-shaped diamond inscribed with Kerr’s initials, which he bought from celeb jeweller Lorraine Schwartz for a mere $1.71 million. Being the romantic that he is, he is said to have gifted it to her on Valentine’s Day 2014.
The courtship continued and in November Low was back at it again, dropping $4.5 million on an 8.88 carat diamond pendant from Schwartz, followed by 11 carat diamond earrings and a matching necklace, ring and bracelet worth $1.98 million. Since there was no special holiday that month, he is believed to have surprised his love with the lavish presents aboard his superyacht, the Equanimity, valued at $330 million.
Which, incidentally, the US government is looking to seize, along with all of Kerr’s jewels and (get this) paintings from legendary artists Basquiet and Picasso (worth $16.45 million), which Low bought for Leonardo DiCaprio! Yes, our friend Low seems to have a penchant for spoiling his fave A-listers, regardless of gender. Red Granite Films even gave Leo Marlon Brando’s Oscar for On the Waterfront as a gift following the Wolf of Wall Street shoot.
Although Kerr hasn’t spoken out on the matter, she is said to be cooperating with authorities and currently still has all of her gifts, but as Page Six points out, “the feds can sue Kerr to get the diamonds back, unless she agrees to hand them over on her own.” Meanwhile, DiCaprio is voluntarily returning all of his presents. I ask again: How is this real life?!

Drop This Fact
The Attorney General’s Chambers of Malaysia (AGC) wasn’t notified of the US’ actions and claims “there has been no evidence” that proves “money has been misappropriated from 1MDB.”
