We already know what the Facebook comments will say about Rami Malek’s outfit here: “Terrible!”, “He looks like an ‘80s villain!”, “Nope.”, “GQ, you’ve lost your touch”. That the Mr. Robot actor is works with one of the top menswear stylists in the game, Ilaria Urbinati will phase no one, nor will the fact that he’s decked out in Burberry threads with a Montblanc watch. That’s because, just like the nerdy kid in your high school that you knew was cool but no one else understood, Rami Malek is ahead of his time with this outfit. It is not going to look “right” to most people. It will actually irk some folks. And no one’s going to care it costs more than an entire wardrobe from J.Crew (sensitive subject, sorry).
Here’s the thing: We think Rami Malek looks excellent but we agree, unless it comes naturally to you, it would probably be a bad idea to pile on the vibe exactly as he did. A pair of loose-fit trousers alone will move a man’s wardrobe forward. Grab a pair that’s pleated and you’re in envelope-pusher territory. A loose-fit knit polo in a rich color like teal or ochre is another wardrobe game-changer too, especially if you live in button-down shirts. Or cop Malek’s bright-white sneakers (Tod’s), rounded mirrored sunglasses (Garrett Leight), or almost-a-flat-top haircut to make your basics look less…basic. In other words, pick this look apart and you’ve got a bunch of things that aren’t so weird, that are very relevant right now, and will give you the stylish oomph you need to distinguish this year from all the other years. (What is fashion good for if not to mark the passage of time?)
Go ahead and let famous guys be the ones who do all the weird stuff at once. Just keep in mind: Nerds usually know what they’re talking about.
