And keep you from looking like a lame dad.
Michael Keaton has always been a beacon of regular guy style—plaid shirts, lightweight jackets, great jeans, and classic sneakers. Now at over 60 years old he’s only getting better, and yesterday appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Keaton exhibited a truly stunning example of his signature sartorial knack. His outfit, a pared-down combination of relaxed (but not too relaxed) jeans, oxford shirt, navy blue sweater, and aviators was punctuated by a jolt of cool—a pair of baby blue and brown Vans Old Skools.
While stylish guys like Wiz Khalifa, Jonah Hill, Tyler the Creator, and Frank Ocean are devoted fans of the Old Skool, they’ve been around for longer than those guys have been alive, since way back in the ’70s. That’s a detail that helps an older guy pull off a trendy item; when said trendy item has been around for a minute. For example, had Keaton been wearing Yeezys, we doubt this look would have come off as so damn cool. But Old Skools? Old Skools and Keaton have been partying since you were in diapers, son.
But there are some rules to wearing them well. Because they’re the focal point of your fit, you want to make sure your pants don’t get in the way of their sight lines. Wear them like Keaton did with straight leg jeans hemmed with virtually no break or go all out skater in a pair of cropped khaki chinos and white or black athletic socks, hell you can even wear them with gym shorts like unsung style hero Jonah Hill. And if you get them in multiple colors like Keaton’s summer hued pair, keep the rest of your outfit’s palette neutral.
