Trending News: This $590K iPhone Heist Is Straight Out Of ‘Fast And The Furious’
Long Story Short
A group of Romanian thieves pulled off a truly Hollywood-esque robbery by snagging $590,000 work of iPhones from a moving van. The thieves were eventually caught and are looking at jail time.
I’ve often wondered where cheap brand new iPhones come from. Are they bought for cheap from a store that went bankrupt? Or maybe they’re stolen and then refurbished to look like new? One thing’s for sure, I never imagined that the new iPhones I’m seeing on Craigslist or eBay were taken like in such an insane way.
As you can see in the video below, immortalized in gif form, one of the thieves crawled out of a hole cut in the van’s roof and cracked open the truck in front of them. The thieves then passed boxes of iPhones through the hole and into the van.
It would have been the perfect heist, if not for the police helicopter that caught the whole epic robbery on tape.
But hold on a sec, the Netherlands isn’t Los Angeles where police helicopters patrol daily. Did cops just get lucky?
A police spokesperson told AP that Dutch authorities had heard reports of thefts from moving trucks but didn’t have the evidence to prove it. For this shipment of iPhones, the cops came prepared with the copter and luckily for them and their budgets, they managed to catch the thieves red-handed.
The five suspects were arrested at a park in the center of the Netherlands on Saturday and will appear in court today. Justice served. That is, until these savvy criminals inevitably escape from prison. They’ll probably ride a helicopter out or something, James Bond style.
