How to be the best-dressed passenger on every flight.
With summer officially upon us, we’re now deep in that time of year where two oppositional forces are play: looking stylish versus staying cool. Sadly, the overlap between these two can be surprisingly scarce, or monotonous, because how many times can you wear a T-shirt and jeans until October? And nowhere is that problem more in need of solving then when you’re about to embark on a summer getaway. The airport outfit conundrum this time of year is very real.
Luckily, we’ve found a couple of options over the years, some right for a work trip, some for play, some for both. And you’d be hard-pressed to find a better one than the one we saw on ~millennial~ Austin Butler, actor, current boyfriend to Vanessa Hudgens, and human being with 1.5 million Instagram followers.
Butler took a bunch of things that sound pretty standard on their own—unremarkable, even—and, by nailing the cut and fit, turned it into a look that’s deceptive in its ease and so utterly of the moment, it should be put in the Smithsonian under the title “Men’s Fashion in 2017” along with an oversize bomber jacket and a pair of track pants.
But what’s so great? Well, the pants are slightly wide and cropped, and he’s not wearing your average button-up, but the of-the-moment camp collar style layered under a navy blue, soft-tailored jacket that’s somewhere between dressed-up cardigan and casual sports coat. He finished off with a pair of classic high-top Converse chucks and slightly circular glasses (and a great, blown-out riff on the classic undercut) and bam, he almost overshadowed his famous lady friend.
That he did this in varying shades of black and navy, chose looser cuts (for ventilation and style), this is quite possibly the easiest go-to airport outfit you can have in your closet. It splits the difference between dressy and casual, looks trendy but not trying-too-hard, and is cool enough for a hot summer’s night but has those much needed warm-weather layers. It’s perfect. Here’s how to get it.
