If you happen to live in a four season climate, being able to leave the house wearing nothing but your favorite jeans, a cotton T-shirt, and some canvas sneakers feels like a privilege this time of year. After months of living in layers and heavy, weatherproof shoes, it feels like flying. By July, sure, the novelty has worn off, but right about now, it still feels supremely good.

Zac Efron and Joe Jonas both epitomized this free, easy vibe yesterday in their own way. Efron, went for a boxy black T-shirt, beat-up blue jeans, and bright white sneakers giving the uniform some George Michael flavor with lots of gold jewelry. Joe Jonas, meanwhile, went more rock ‘n’ roll in a vintage Van Halen T-shirt, black jeans, and white Chucks. Gold-lens shades were his only add-on. It was all very West Hollywood.

The subtly different looks demonstrate that while the uniform is universal, the exact pieces are personal—and the details make a difference. All the more reason to not only track down your version of the perfect T-shirt, and carefully break in your own jeans, but also to invest in the items if push comes to shove. If you the sneakers you want are from a hyped label, or the T-shirt is some rare deadstock find, maybe go ahead and drop a few extra bucks to make it yours. Because why should something you wear so often, that brings you so much pleasure, be the cheapest thing you own? Doesn’t make any sense to us.
